North Carolina Public School Maintenance Association
History The North Carolina Public School Maintenance Association (NCPSMA) was founded in 1959 and incorporated as a non-profit organization in 1966. A full-time executive secretary was hired in 1966. Godfrey Beasley was the first appointed executive secretary. In 2005 the title was changed to executive director. Roxie Mack is the current executive director. In 1966 NCPSMA began publication of its monthly journal, The Maintenance Beacon. Milton Rogerson was the full-time editor of The Maintenance Beacon from 1990-2006. The publication improved tremendously through his expertise. A Legislative Committee was formed in the 1970s to keep members abreast of legislative issues that affect maintenance personnel. The association supported full state funding for maintenance supervisors and directors. NCPSMA helped to obtain benefits for maintenance personnel comparable to full-time state employees including vacation, retirement, holiday and sick leave compensation, longevity program and medical insurance. The first annual NCPSMA Convention/Workshop was held in 1972. The Convention/Workshop has continued to grow steadily each year. NCPSMA endorsed the Jay Palmer Scholarship Fund in 1989 for public school maintenance personnel, their spouses and children. The scholarship is awarded annually to qualified recipients enrolled in institutions of higher learning. NCPSMA has benefited immensely through the leadership of the elected state presidents.
