The North Carolina Public School Maintenance Association (NCPSMA) was founded in 1959. In 1966, NCPSMA was incorporated as a non-profit organization and hired a full-time Executive Secretary, Godfrey Beasley. In 2005 the title of Executive Secretary was changed to Executive Director. The current Executive Director is Kristie Payne.
In 1966, NCPSMA began publication of their monthly newsletter, "The Maintenance Beacon." Milton Rogerson was hired as the full-time Editor and through his expertise the publication excelled immensely. Mr. Rogerson was employed from 1990-2006.
In the 1970's a Legislative Committee was formed to keep members abreast of legislative issues that affect North Carolina School Maintenance personnel. The association supported full state funding for Maintenance Supervisors and Directors. NCPSMA helped to obtain benefits for North Carolina school maintenance personnel comparable to full-time state employees including vacation, retirement, holiday and sick leave compensation, the longevity program and medical insurance.
The first annual NCPSMA Convention/Workshop was held in 1972 and has continued to grow steadily each year.
In 1989, NCPSMA endorsed the Jay Palmer Scholarship Fund allocated for North Carolina Public School Maintenance personnel, their spouses and children. The scholarship is awarded annually to qualified recipients enrolled in institutions of higher learning.
